Liposuction is a surgical procedure of contouring the body. It removes fat from many different sites on the human body including face and neck, arms, trunk, abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs, knees, legs and ankles. Liposuction is not a weight-loss method, but for getting rid of located deposits of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. The best candidate for a liposuction is the person with relatively normal weight that has an excess of fat in determined areas of the body. In case of skin flaccidity, additional surgical procedures may be necessary to eliminate and to tighten the excess of skin. In any case, the lipectomies are being performed not very often.
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia and under control of anaethetist. A special cannula attached to a suction device is inserted through small incisions under the skin  (0,3 – 0,5 cm) where fat tissue has accumulated. On one-off basis 1,0 – 1,5 liters of fat can be removed (max. 3 liters). For the 4-6 weeks after the operation special compressive garments should be worn.
The commonest complication, although rare, of liposuction are small irregularities in the skin that disappear with massages. Infection is extremely uncommon and skin hematomas disappear in 2-3 weeks.
